OVERVIEW
The Executive Director of the Marathon Public Library provides overall leadership and day‐to‐day management of the Marathon Public Library, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Working with the Executive Director is a part-time (30-hours per week) Library Director, as well as student interns and volunteers.
The mission of the Library is to strengthen our community by connecting people with ideas, information, and innovative services. The Library provides critical general library services, children and adult programs, and public access to computers, internet, and fax. The Library is the only publicly-available digital access point in the town of Marathon.
Located in the heart of the Big Bend region of west Texas, the Marathon Public Library was founded in 1954 as a branch of the Alpine Public Library. As the needs of both communities grew and changed, the decision was made in 2013 to establish the Marathon Public Library as a separate 501(c)3. Since 2013, the Library has experienced unprecedented growth in all areas of its operations (see attached).
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Executive Director is a mature, self-confident, self-motivated, and experienced leader who, in accordance with the Library’s mission, vision, strategic plan and policies, can foster the continued growth and excellence of the Marathon Public Library, while spearheading the final planning and subsequent implementation of “Heart of Marathon: A Master Plan to Enlarge the Marathon Public Library; revitalize the Marathon Historical Museum; and rejuvenate the Town Square.”
The ideal candidate must have a proven track record of success as an experienced fundraising professional who can develop and launch a comprehensive fundraising campaign that secures:
1) capital support for the “Heart of Marathon Master Plan;
2) general operating support for the Library and Museum; and
3) funds for an endowment.
The successful candidate also will lead and oversee all services and programs, and the administration of the Library and Museum.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES
- Develop all strategic, program, organization, fundraising, and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board;
- Develop, manage and implement Heart of Marathon, a comprehensive campaign to enlarge the library; revitalize the Museum; and rejuvenate the Town Square;
- Build strong personal and organizational relationships with community residents and foster a culture of philanthropy among all key constituents;
- Draft, secure approval, and implement an annual Library Collections Development Plan and a Museum Collections Management System that guides the selection and retention of materials;
- Develop, manage, and implement an annual fundraising program, in concert with the Board Development Committee;
- Develop, help deliver, and evaluate current and new Library and Museum programs with the Library Director and Board program committees;
- Collaborate with the Marathon Independent School District (MISD) to develop new programs that meet the needs of students and teachers;
- Adhere to best human resources practices, including hiring, training, performance reviews; and supervision of all staff and volunteers;
- Develop and maintain financial best practices;
- Prepare annual and campaign budgets in consultation with the staff, Board Treasurer, and the Board and be responsible for ensuring that MPL maintains best financial practices;
- Develop, implement, and file required reports to meet state and federal requirements;
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative for MPL in Marathon; Brewster County; Texas; and the country; and
- Advocate, promote, and publicize MPL programs, special events, recognition, and more through a variety of media including print, TV, radio, and social media.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university;
- A proven track record of entrepreneurial leadership and results-driven success, with experience in or with nonprofit organizations; direct fundraising, including capital and endowment campaigns; and preparing and managing budgets, preparing financial reports, and presenting financial information;
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation;
- Highly organized and demonstrated ethical behavior;
- Strong written and oral communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated experience forging strong relationships, building networks, and inspiring support from and collaborating with diverse constituent groups and key stakeholders, including employees, Board members, volunteers, MISD administration and teachers Brewster County officials; and others in and outside the Marathon community.
